TECH TIPS FOR MONTESA COTA 315

  • READ your owner's manual
It's full of useful information that will make your life easier. If you have questions you can contact us.

  • AIR FILTER
Clean it after every ride. To reinstall the filter it is IMPORTANT to put the filter onto the lid FIRST and then put both together into the air box. Make sure that the lip is well seated and sealed with grease. In very dusty or muddy conditions it is a good idea to seal the perimeter of the lid to the box with duct tape.

  • SPARK PLUG
You MUST use a resistor type plug. It must have an "R" in the designation. Use a Bosch WR 8 DP. You can find them at most auto parts stores. Using a non-resistor plug will cause the bike to run erratically.

  • FUEL
Use a 50/50 mix of 93 octane pump gas and 105-octane race fuel. Straight pump gas will cause the engine to knock.

  • TWO STROKE OIL
Use a high quality synthetic two-stroke oil, mixed at 80:1. We recommend Silkolene Comp Two Plus.

  • GEARBOX/CLUTCH OIL
For best results use Silkolene "Light Gear Oil Off Road" 75 WT (product code 43-0261). This is available through most motorcycle shops. ELF HTX 740 is also a good choice. Switching oils will cause decreased performance. Pick one oil and stay with it. Keep several bottles on hand.

  • CARBURETOR
On 2001 and newer most tuning can be done by adjusting the needle and the fuel screw (out = richer). On 2000 and older to remove the pilot jet you must use the correct size screwdriver. Failure to do so can damage the carb body.

  • REAR SPOKES
Keep a eye on them during break-in. Be careful not to over-tighten nipples. 1 turn = 2 turns of a conventional nipple. Tapping a properly adjusted spoke with a wrench should give a tight ringing sound.  If a spoke breaks replace it immediately. Keep an eye on the rear disc bolts as well. Failure to do so can cause damage to the rear hub.

  • THROTTLE CABLE
Routing the cable correctly is very important. Make sure that the elbow at the top of the carb is at the 10 o'clock position. Make sure that petcock does not contact cable/elbow when reinstalling the fuel tank. (see diagram). Always make sure that the throttle cable functions correctly before starting the bike.
